The Three Models

We stock three bear spray models. Model ① is included in the base set; ② and ③ are +500 JPY upgrades (you can't choose which — we assign one). We only carry sprays from manufacturers with strong track records in Japan and abroad.

① Base set

POLICE MAGNUM B-609

A proven standard model, adopted by several police departments and local governments in Japan. No holster included — we recommend storing it in a backpack side pocket.

Note: Under Japan's Ministry of the Environment guideline "Recommended Performance Requirements for Bear Deterrent Sprays" (Japanese), this model is classified as a personal-defense (anti-human) spray and does not meet the official recommended requirements for bear deterrence. The manufacturer states it is also effective against bears, but please rent it with that distinction in mind. If you want a model that broadly meets the official bear-deterrent requirements, choose ② or ③.

UDAP Pepper Power

A high-concentration, EPA-registered model. Greater spray force and range than ①, rated for both Asiatic black bears and brown bears. Comes with a dedicated holster.
The spray mechanism is a bit tricky to operate, so we recommend watching a demo video beforehand to practice.

③ +500 JPY

Kuma Ichimokusan

A Japan-made spray rated for both black bears and brown bears, designed to meet U.S. EPA performance guidelines (it is not an EPA-registered product). Comes with a holster.
The clear safety cap can come off easily, so we recommend securing it with tape (don't tape it too tightly, or you won't be able to spray in an emergency).

Quality Control

We only stock bear sprays from manufacturers with a strong reliability track record in Japan and abroad. Expiration dates are strictly managed, and any can that has lost 2% or more of its purchase weight is immediately pulled from inventory to prevent a customer receiving a can with insufficient propellant.

Returned cans go through the same weight check, and we inspect for spray marks or weight loss before a can is sent to the next customer. Any can that fails this check is removed from the rental pool.

Safety Notes

About the classification of the POLICE MAGNUM B-609

Under Japan's Ministry of the Environment guideline "Recommended Performance Requirements for Bear Deterrent Sprays" (Japanese), ① POLICE MAGNUM B-609 is classified as a personal-defense (anti-human) spray and does not meet the official recommended requirements for bear deterrence. The manufacturer states it is also effective against bears, but please apply for this model with that distinction in mind. If you want a model that broadly meets the official bear-deterrent requirements, choose ② UDAP Pepper Power or ③ Kuma Ichimokusan.

Always check wind direction

Spraying into a headwind risks the spray blowing back onto you. Check the wind before use and spray downwind.

Keep the safety pin secure

Once the safety pin is lost or damaged, it cannot be reused. Keep the can in its holster or case during transport so the pin doesn't accidentally come loose.

If the can is sprayed or used

Regardless of the reason (bear encounter, accidental discharge, etc.), the 8,000 JPY security deposit will be kept as a replacement fee. A can is considered "used" if its weight has dropped by 5 g or more upon return, or if spray residue is visible around the nozzle.

ARTICLE 01

General Provisions & Purpose

These terms establish the conditions for using the Bear Spray Rental Service ("Service") provided by Bear Guard ("We/Us"). By using this Service, the user agrees to these terms. This product is a supplementary device to reduce the risk of bear encounters during hiking or camping and does not guarantee complete safety.

ARTICLE 02

Rental Period and Extension

The rental period is from the scheduled arrival date (day before use) to the return shipping date (day after use).
If the return is delayed, you must contact us in advance. A late fee of 500 JPY per can per day will be charged for any delay, regardless of prior notice.

ARTICLE 03

Payment, Deposit & Cancellation Policy

Payment must be made in advance via "PayPal (Credit Card)". Please pay by the due date stated in the invoice email sent after you submit the booking form.

Security Deposit:

A security deposit of 8,000 JPY will be added to your initial invoice. This deposit will be fully refunded via PayPal once the returned item is inspected and confirmed to be unused and undamaged.

Cancellation Fees:

Before Shipping (Up to 4 days before start date): Free (Refunded minus transaction fees)
After Shipping: 100% of the rental fee (Non-refundable. However, the 8,000 JPY deposit will be refunded upon the return of the unused item.)

ARTICLE 04

Delivery Area & Conditions

This service is available nationwide in Japan (excluding certain remote islands where delivery is restricted by shipping companies).

Extra Shipping Fee:

Deliveries to Hokkaido and Kyushu will incur an additional shipping fee of 500 JPY.

Optional: Hotel Delivery Permission Request (+500 JPY / order):

If you select this option on the booking form, we will contact your accommodation on your behalf and request permission to deliver and hold the package for you. If the accommodation does not grant permission, we will cancel the booking and refund your order in full. This option is available for hotels and inns with a front desk only; Airbnb and vacation rentals are not eligible, and guests staying at such properties must obtain permission from the host themselves.

Important Rule for Airbnb / Vacation Rentals:

If delivering to an accommodation without a front desk, you must confirm the exact mailing address and receive delivery permission from the host in advance. We are not liable for non-delivery caused by incorrect addresses or lack of mailboxes.

Important Return Rule:

When returning the item, you MUST specify "Ground Shipping (陸送)" and ship from a convenience store or Yamato Transport office. Air transport is strictly prohibited by law.

ARTICLE 05

Product Management & Prohibited Acts

Users must manage the product with the care of a good manager. The following acts are prohibited:

Using it for purposes other than bear deterrence (e.g., against people, objects, pranks)
Subleasing, transferring, or pawning the product
Disassembling or modifying the product

ARTICLE 06

Compensation for Use, Loss, or Damage

In the following cases, the security deposit (8,000 JPY) will not be refunded and will be kept as a replacement fee:

If sprayed/used:
Regardless of the reason (bear encounter, accidental discharge), the 8,000 JPY deposit will be kept. Note: The product will be considered "used" if either of the following applies: (1) the weight of the returned can is reduced by 5g or more, or (2) there are visible signs of use, such as chemical residue or spray marks around the nozzle.
Loss, theft, or total damage:
The deposit will be kept, and any excess current market value of the product may be charged.
Loss or damage of the safety pin:
Since it cannot be reused, the deposit (8,000 JPY) will be kept.

ARTICLE 07

Disclaimer

We shall not be liable for any damages (injuries, accidents, mental distress, etc.) arising from the use or inability to use this product, except in cases of intent or gross negligence on our part. The user acknowledges that the effectiveness of this product varies depending on weather conditions and individual bears.

ARTICLE 08

Consent regarding the classification of our gear

Under the Ministry of the Environment's recommended requirements for bear sprays (Japanese), the ① POLICE MAGNUM B-609 is classified as a personal-defense spray. Its manufacturer states it is also effective against bears, but we do not guarantee that. By agreeing to these Terms, the user is deemed to have selected their gear understanding this.
